The Black Hole

Event Horizon — 47″ x 47″ x 1.5″

A Modern Tribute to the M87* Black Hole

Event Horizon is a striking three‑panel artwork inspired by the first‑ever photograph of a black hole — the now‑iconic image captured from galaxy M87. Artist Kurt Wedgley finds his fascination with our planet, deep space, and the mysteries of the cosmos into a sculptural, meticulously engineered piece that merges science, craftsmanship, and modern design.

The Black Hole: Achieving True Darkness

Kurt devoted extensive research to finding the deepest black paint available. While the blackest substance — carbon nanotubes — proved too fragile for long‑term use, he selected Black Nextel 4‑part coating, known for its exceptionally low reflectivity.

This specialized coating demanded exacting conditions:

  • Precise temperature and humidity
  • Controlled particle size
  • Specific air pressure during application

After three attempts, Kurt achieved a flawless, non‑reflective black hole. Even a small quantity of this paint alone costs around $200, underscoring the rarity and technical challenge of working with it.

Custom‑Engineered Canvases

Every element of Event Horizon is handcrafted. Kurt begins by selecting premium lumber, then uses a custom jig he designed to cut curves and beveled edges. The underlying structure — shown in the provided image — is a sculptural work of art on its own.

Each canvas is:

  • Covered with large‑format canvas material
  • Stapled cleanly on the back
  • Primed with professional‑grade gesso
  • Painted with high‑grade acrylics

The outer edge of the black hole is finished in glossy black acrylic varnish, creating a visual “point of no return” — the true event horizon. Stainless‑steel posts connect the three canvases, completing the modern, dimensional presentation.
